QARAFEST WAS BORN IN 2020
Despite the pandemic, the festival still took place and met its first viewers online.

2200 people from all over Kazakhstan got acquainted with the 8 important documentaries of the past years.

The main characters of these paintings find a place for creativity in the midst of hostilities, collect honey from wild bees, get married, tease each other, reflect, share their experiences – learn to express love in a variety of ways.

THE FESTIVAL managed
to organize both online screenings and meet with the citizens live in the Almaty cinema "Arman".

10 documentaries from all over the world - from Chile to Romania - opened up discussions on a variety of topics: from romantic relationships in the digital age to the adventures of three stray Istanbul dogs. In total, the festival welcomed around 3,500 viewers online and offline.

ANOTHER DIRECTION OF THE FESTIVAL –
opening up opportunities for the development of projects by local and Central Asian filmmakers.

To this end, in 2021, the pitching of documentary projects from Central Asia was born - AÝT Central Asia! Pitching participants presented their film projects, received feedback from international documentary film experts, and the winners won a cash prize and the opportunity to present their project at major international pitching venues.

IN 2022
QARAFEST RETURNED
with a new initiative – the cultural- educational project Festiväl dostary ('Festival friends').

Within the framework of the project, 10 enthusiasts from all over Kazakhstan completed online training and showed the festival films of past QaraFest releases to their communities.

Festival dostary participants and volunteers gathered 762 viewers across the country and staged screenings of festival films in Astana, Kyzylorda, Atyrau, Aktobe, Petropavlovsk, Almaty and Turkestan. So the festival cinema from QaraFest made its first journey around Kazakhstan.

The third edition
of the festival was held in the summer of 2023 in the ARTiShock theater in Almaty. 11 feature films from Sweden, the Netherlands, Armenia, Ukraine, Poland, France, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, India, Tajikistan, Denmark, Germany and Finland, were shown. In addition to the main program, for the first time in the history of the festival, a short film competition "Biz" was held. It included 8 strong Kazakh documentaries. Ratmir Nazirov's "Pink Seagulls" was selected as Best Film and awarded with 1000 euros! "Dina" by Yadykar Ibraimov and Jack Wolf received the Special Mention award!
